NEVELSON TILES
For KPF, we fabricated a series of custom rift-cut oak tiles that abstract and celebrate facades from some of the firm's past architectural projects. Each 2-foot square panel translates the scale and character of a building facade into a tactile, highly detailed wooden relief. Through precise CNC milling and careful material selection, the pieces capture the geometric language and architectural identity of the original designs while transforming them into a new medium.
Challenge
The primary challenge was preserving the complexity and visual depth of large-scale building facades within a much smaller 2-foot square format. While the facade designs were provided, developing the machining strategy required extensive testing and refinement to ensure every detail was accurately represented. Scaling down intricate architectural elements without losing clarity demanded careful toolpath planning, precise milling parameters, and close attention to material behavior throughout the fabrication process.
